CUSTOMERS BEWARE!

We have had a couple of incidents lately where server fans have burned out or frozen up, resulting in heat build up within the case, causing the server to crash.  Most tower cases contain two or three fans:  one is on the CPU.  If this fan dies, your CPU will burn up within minutes and you are out of luck.  There is not much you can do about this except change the CPU fan once a year or so.  Another fan is part of the power supply itself; if this dies, the server may be ok if the computer is stored in a very cool room at all times.  A third fan is often installed on the back of cases that contain a Pentium II or III or IV class processor;  this fan blows across the CPU and keeps heat from building up around the CPU.  If this fan goes, the server will sporadically lock up, log users out, or crash all together.

To prevent disaster, check your server fans once in a while by accessing the back of the case and sticking a tooth pick or straw in the fans to make sure that they are still spinning.  This may sound like overkill, but this practice may save you lots of time and money in downtime or reload expenses.
